how do i keep my wig from sliding?

How to keep your wig from slipping off!

When you start wearing a wig one of the biggest  fears is - WHAT IF MY WIG COMES OFF! Depending on the type of wig cap you have - machine made, lace front, handtied... will determine which methods will be right for you. Thank goodness there are lots of choices!

The first is a wig cap, it may have even come with the wig that you just purchased.
There are 3 types
1  A nylon stocking cap (just like your knee highs for those of us that still wear them!).  This type is typically used when you have little to no hair.
2.  A fish net cap ( you guessed it, just like your go out and party stockings!). This type is used for people with hair. It helps somewhat to keep your wig in place but is mostly used to help keep your hair under control.
3.  Modal, bamboo, micro-fiber….these are very soft wig caps or liners to help keep your wig in place.  Particularly nice for people with little to no hair as it protects your scalp from the potential itchiness of the underside of the wig.

Pros and Cons –
They are easy to use and are very inexpensive. They will also help with potential itchiness by adding a protective layer between the wig and your scalp. If you have longer hair it will keep your ends under control.
They generally don’t keep the wig very secure. They also add a second layer of material making your head warmer, and they may feel a bit constricting.

The second is a band that wraps around your head and typically secures with velcro.
There are 2 types
1.  The first is a silicone band that starts at your hairline and wraps around to the nape of your neck and velcros.  These are particularly good if you have no hair because the silicone grips well to your skin and provides a little cushion on a sensitive scalp.
2.  The next is the velvet wig grip. This is basically a 2 sided velvet band that is sandwiched between your hair and your wig. It basically “velcros” to your hair on one side and does the same to your wig on the other.  This method is going to keep your wig on at the beach, in a wind storm, and during a wild night of dancing!
Pros and Cons – They hold your wig on great, especially the velvet band but they can add some extra pressure to your head.

Last but not least is glue or tape made for wigs to secure it in place.
1.  “It Stays” is a body glue that will help to adhere your lace front wig to the skin in front of your hairline.  It’s in a little roller bottle  –  like deodorant – and you roll it across your forehead where your lace front will sit, press your fingers against it for 20 seconds and you’re good to go! The glue is water soluble so it is easy to take off your wig and clean it -and your skin – with a damp cloth.
2.  Double sided tape that is made for your lace front wig is another great way to hold your wig in place.  Like I said, it’s double sided so you cut the size that you need, adhere it to the lace front and put your wig on as usual. When you’re sure its on properly you place your fingers on the lace front, just like with the glue and hold it down for 20 seconds. Your wig is NOT going to move! This needs a tape removing product or alcohol on a cotton swab to get it off of your skin – easy but a bit more time consuming.
Pros and Cons – The glue works well to prevent puckering of your lace front and is easy to clean up, but may slide up just a bit during the day. The tape takes a little more time and patience to use but your wig is not going anywhere until you take it off!

Just a note about a couple of other things.
Clips can be added to your wig to clip it onto your hair.
A silicone piece can be added to the front of a machine made wig to help grip to the skin.
And finally – double sided tape made for polyurethane tabs on certain wig caps can be used.

So you can see that there are many different methods to help your wig stay on. Some are personal preference and some are determined by the type of cap your wig has.
Either way you will most likely need something. Make your life easier by visiting an experienced wig specialist and take the anxiety out of wondering, IS MY WIG GOING TO COME OFF?
